Austrian Chocolate: Hazelnut, Nougat, and Aerated Bars

Austrian candy makers put hazelnut and nougat together a lot. They like aerated chocolate, and boxed truffles. Our 12 SKUs come from Maitre Truffout and Piacelli, plus Woogie. Jarred spreads and bars sit at the cheap end, around $34.26 a case. The truffle boxes climb toward $110.45. It’s a small and focused section. There’s some range to it, though. We’d call it a specialty shelf more than a big category. If you already sell French or Belgian chocolate, this makes a good second European shelf. The hazelnut-nougat and the airy bars taste different from a truffle you’d get elsewhere.

Think candy shops and specialty grocers that already have some European chocolate. A gift shop could use the jars and boxes as stand-alone gifts. Several SKUs come in glass jars or boxes, so you aren’t repackaging anything. This is rich, textured chocolate. The people who come back for it are mostly ones already looking for imported stuff, and a general walk-in shopper is less likely to reach for it. If you’re new to it, we’d start with the two spreads. They’re more of an everyday thing. The truffle boxes suit someone shopping for an occasion. A jar of hazelnut spread is something people buy for the house, while a box of truffles usually has a birthday or a holiday behind it.

Hazelnut and Nougat Spreads by the Jar

Two spreads. The Hazelnut and Nougat Spread comes in a 300-gram glass cup. The Hazelnut and Nougat Duo Spread uses the same 300-gram cup but swirls two flavors together. You can reuse both jars, and on a gift shelf glass looks a lot nicer than a plastic tub. Since they’re the same size, they sit side by side without moving any shelving around. We’d start with the single one and add the duo once the first is selling. The duo is the more fun of the two, to us. That gives you two prices from one format. Glass also means the jar has a second life after the spread’s gone.

Aerated and White Chocolate Bars

Prefer bars? Choc n Air is an Aerated Milk Chocolate Bar at 150 grams. Inside it’s full of little air pockets. The White Chocolate Bar is 100 grams and plain. The Premium White Chocolate Bar with Strawberry is also 100 grams, strawberry flavored. Stock all three and the shelf gets some texture to it. You also won’t need a second supplier for white chocolate. Plain white and strawberry white next to the airy bar make a nice little row. Bars are the simple sell here, and they take up very little room.

Truffle Boxes and Chocolate-Covered Treats

Up at the pricier end it’s boxes and specialty stuff. The Fancy Milk Chocolate and Hazelnut Truffles Box is 100 grams of milk chocolate truffles with hazelnuts, boxed for gifting. Milk Chocolate with Whole Hazelnuts Bar has that hazelnut too, in a 100-gram bar with no box. Chocolate Bananas come in at 150 grams. Milk Chocolate Catfingers come in a 3.5-ounce box, and they’re another fun shape. Then the Dark Chocolate Covered Toffee Caramel, a 175-gram bag with toffee caramel in dark chocolate. Most of this page is milk or white chocolate, so that one’s handy if you want something dark on the shelf. We’d put the truffle box near the toffee caramel bag. One’s a gift and the other’s cheaper, and both are Austrian.
